ARTIST STATEMENT I have worked
as a technical writer to feed my family. I take photographs to feed my
soul. As a photographer I capture and preserve tiny slices of time, space,
light and life to savor, preserve, and share with others. Photographs
present
echoes of reality. They, like many memories, are
soft delicate fragments sliced from life. They are taken out of
context, abstracted
and changed through the process and my vision of the world.
The resulting image is a reflection of my vision
and a small part, a detail, of the greater world around me. Most of my past work has been in black-and-white (B&W). A further abstraction
of reality, I feel that B&W images allowed me to maintain greater control
over the image. Not only can I carefully frame and compose my image, but
also through lights, darks, shadows, shapes, contrast, gray tones, and
placement I can guide my viewers to focus on the important elements of
my vision. I especially delight in B&W photos of people, social
events and activities. I have often shared these images in the form of postcards
mailed
to a select group.
I have found that color and digital photography is often more challenging. The intensity of the
colors and contrast can be overwhelming. I occasionally find
the exquisite
details, subtleties, and essence of the scene is lost in an intense
kaleidoscope of colors. A bright red in the corner may pull my viewer
from the soft
shadows of my primary subject. My work and photographic vision have evolved over time. I now find that although I have been taking photographs for over 48 years, I still have a lot to learn. I am trying to put more thought into my compositions. While I still delight in the grab shot that works, I am also looking for tighter and better composed images. I have found some new images I plan to start displaying as I rebuild this web collection. |
