Polaroid Image Transfers

  • The Polaroid image transfer, or dye transfer, process requires a color slide, Polaroid peel-apart film, and watercolor paper.
  • The slide image is printed on the Polaroid film.
  • As the Polaroid development starts, the positive and negative are separated. The positive is discarded.
  • The partially developed negative is pressed onto a sheet of watercolor paper to transfer the print dyes into the surface.
  • Once development is complete, the negative is slowly and carefully peeled away form the paper and discarded.

The result? An image similar in appearance to a finely-detailed watercolor painting. The colors are warm and saturated. And, every image is unique. The final print is affected by the many variables in the process including temperature, length of development, contact pressure, slide colors, wetness of the watercolor paper, and the photography muse.
